Based in Clerkenwell, London, Graphic Thought Facility was formed in 1990 by Royal College of Art graduates Paul Neale and Andy Stevens. This print is the result of work they did for the Science Museum using back lighting technology. They designed and had made their own oversized electro-luminescent signage. During the research and development period they saw ready-made EL components designed by engineers to backlight a number of familiar objects. Out of context, without the plastic face of a mobile phone, digital watch or car dashboard, they had such an abstract and decorative richness it was difficult to know what they were or that their job was actually so functional.
